Advantages And Disadvantages Of Digital Technology In The Classroom

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Digital Technology In The Classroom - Tecnología

Technology has become an essential part of our lives. It is even unthinkable to live in a society where an internet connection is not present. Education has had the same model for more than a thousand years, and technology is finally changing it. Is this atrophying the children´s minds? Is this disturbing education? Technology has more advantages than disadvantages, the problem is that people don´t like changes at all, so a debate comes when we talk about the future of education.

“The use of technology in education has removed educational boundaries, both students and teachers can collaborate in real time using advanced educational technologies” (Ramey, 2013). Digital technology, if it is used properly could enhance both students’ and teachers’ learning, not just in a classroom, but in a whole educational institution. Having free access to internet connection might be dangerous at first, but if the correct path is followed, it is one of the most important and vital tools of our lives. “Internet is now considered to be the most powerful tool of information that is available to mankind” (Jones, 2011). Nowadays books are not even compared to the great power internet has, information is free to access, so spending on books for school are not necessary anymore, in some institutions it is already like that, and it should be that way everywhere.

The small number of disadvantages is not even comparable to the advantages this tool offers. One of the biggest benefits of implementing technology in classrooms is the promotion of independence in students. Teachers are less required but as important as always, because they are the ones who are in charge of guiding students in the use of technology and providing the necessary tools to acquire enough knowledge. Preparing students for the future is a key factor, because nowadays we live in a world where technology is as normal as having a book, so its proper manipulation must be taught in schools at an early age. This way children are prepared when they get older to adopt a new way of thinking when it comes to technology. Technology might be expensive, but once it has been bought the economic savings are notorious, because textbooks and tuition prices will be lowered. Technology doesn’t stop evolving, and older models of computers or phones get devaluated, so people that don’t have enough money can save some with these kinds of purchases. Comfort is a key factor too, technology gives easier alternatives to problems, so students will be more encouraged.

Not everything is good about the adoption of technology in classrooms, students might get too comfortable and stop doing their homework or classwork, because technology was created to make people’s lives easier and to provide simple solutions to daily problems (Jones, 2011). Distraction is one of the worst disadvantages. Students instead of following the teacher’s instructions, might play games, or listen to music, or even to chat with other people. This could be an advantage, but not at school, because at school students are not supposed to play games or chat with friends. It is almost impossible to avoid this kind of conduct in the classroom. It is something normal and teachers should learn how to control this. Here is where another big problem enters, the negative views in technology produced by parents (Ramey, 2013). We all have heard parents disgusted by the effects technology have produced in their kids, and that it should be avoided or strictly controlled. The truth here is that people that have this point of view just listen to the negative effects of technology instead of being focused on the good ones. This is normal because people tend to listen to the bad things that happen, so if they hear that their kids aren’t paying attention at school because they are playing games, they will be against the use of technology in the classroom. Some peoples’ reaction to a disadvantage can be a disadvantage. Another disadvantage of technology is that the use of technology reduces human interaction (Himmelsbach, 2019). The only way to avoid this is to control this attitude, and this is the teacher´s job.

In conclusion, the use of technology in a classroom is an incredible tool and opportunity for schools that are starting to adopt it. There are many points of view in favor and against the use of technology in a classroom, but the fact that you can have almost all the information available in the world in one click is unbelievable. Teachers can learn a lot too. This is a benefit for everyone inside a classroom, and adopting technology doesn’t mean that a class will be boring or funny, it means that it will be more efficient and effective. It also helps teachers to think of new methods of teaching and learning. Finally, I think it is important to say that technology will never stop evolving, and this is just the beginning. It is working for schools, so there’s something right about this. The investment on technology is worth all the knowledge that will be acquired by an entire educational institution and the big savings over time. Children at first won’t follow the right path, but that is on the hands of the teachers, to guide the kids and to teach them how technology should be used to satisfy their needs and to improve their learning with a simple tool and to show them that it is not hard at all.
